This could be playing out like Mags's worst-case scenario . . .

JUPITER, Fla. -- As a bridge between full-squad workouts and Grapefruit League play the Cardinals today hold the first of two so-called coaches games behind Roger Dean Stadium.
With coaches serving as pitcher, two teams will play until every player receives two at-bats. The game typically lasts about an hour. Most notable may be who is missing.
Right fielder Lance Berkman is not scheduled to appear in today's game as he continues to deal with left elbow soreness. The condition prevented him from participating in outfield drills Friday and clearly affected him during this morning's workout. Berkman was initially skipped during outfield throwing before lobbing several tosses as drills progressed. The club is describing its approach as precautionary, though Berkman acknowledged Friday experiencing some discomfort while stretching out his arm this winter.
Manager Tony La Russa said he expects Berkman to be available for Sunday's return match.
The Cardinals' Grapefruit League schedule officially opens Monday at Roger Dean Stadium against the Florida Marlins. They play five games in the first four days with a split-squad scheduled for Thursday in Port St. Lucie against the New York Mets.
La Russa cited Berkman's comments from earlier this spring that playing the outfield may be less stressful than returning to first base, where Puma had played most of the last seven seasons for the Houston Astros. Reminded that Berkman's arm may be a bigger issue than his surgically-repaired knees, La Russa said, "He can hit the cut-off man. that's all you want outfielders to do mostly."
Pressed on Berkman's limitations, La Russa added, "We're doing cut-offs and relays. He knows cut-offs and relays. There isn't a whole lot [he doesn't know]."

Wainwright has a season ending elbow injury
Punto is out 8-12 weeks
Edmonds never showed up
Berkman has elbow soreness
Freese may not be ready for the spring opener as he deals with recovery from last years ankle injuries.

That's perfect. We'll get a chance to see a lot of Craig at 3B and RF!
This season is gonna be awesome.

Yeah, but at this rate he'll have to play both at the same time.

If we need someone to play RF and 3B at the same time, shouldn't we try to get Ankiel back?

If I recall correctly from my sandlot days, in situations like those you just call right fall out of bounds.

That was fine until the one pain in the ass lefthanded hitter in your group got up. Then you had to make left field out of bounds and have everyone shift. Or you could have the pitcher throw from the third base line, but that was just weird.

Friggin' left handers. They ought to ban everyone of them.

We never let lefthanded kids play. They didnt really mind though. Most were busy during the summers entertaining people at the circus.

There are two kinds of people in the world. Right-handed, and perfect.

My left middle finger is pointed in your general direction.
I played Legion ball with a guy who hated left-handed pitchers. He's on the bench during a game bitching about "the stupid cock-eyed way left-handed pitchers wear their hats" among other traits, apparently oblivious to the fact that he's unleashing this screed on a left-handed pitcher with whom he had been a teammate for almost the entire summer.
Me: "You know who you're sitting next to, right?"
Him: "You're left-handed?!?"
And he wasn't even the dumbest guy I ever played ball with. That distinction goes to a guy who warmed the bench for my high school team. During every game, there was a faction who would look at the initial(s) on the other team's hats and associate a derogatory term. For example, Milton became "Morons," Braintree became "Bitches," and Natick became "Nerds." Brilliant, cutting edge stuff.
So when we played Framingham North, this genius sees the "FN" on their hats and says: "I got one. Fucking Knuckleheads."

in water cooler talk, jeff gordon has some plain talk for the cards that makes sense and should probably be heeded sooner, rather than (too) later:
"All along I believed it was unrealistic to expect a 35-year-old Lance Berkman to turn back the clock to 2004 and become an everyday outfielder again. I believe he can help this team quite a bit, but playing a full-time role out in right field is begging for trouble over the 162-game grind. The Cards need to scale back expectations for him and keep him healthy for those critical RBI situations that can make or break seasons."
Compare with Hummel, who states frankly:
"I would not be surprised to see these ailments crop up at various times during the season and, in fact, would be surprised if Berkman finished the season with the Cardinals."
Unless their secret plan all along has been to trade Pujols, assuming it could even be done, and use Berkman at 1B, it sounds like the CW is moving toward, basically, move him into a late career Rusty Staubb role now, rather than put him on the DL and letting his career end there.

So if Berkman and Freese are not goign to be healthy enough to make an impact then this team is the very same one we seen toward the end of 2010 and they sucked.

Don't forget we won't have Wainwright.

Reminds me of the used car salesman in the Muppet Movie.

I'm thinking the Cardinals should have kicked the tires before making this purchase .

....and in other news it looks like Motte got pushed around pretty good today . ( 5 hits, 5 earned runs , in 1 inning of "work" ! Maybe Dunc had him working on another pitch . and of course it's early, but Theriot can only see Mendoza with binoculars .

let's hope. if he developed another pitcher he could be devastating.

Great idea, Gordo. Let's just circle the days that's going to happen on the calendar right now and give him days off when they know he's not going to come up with anyone on base.

Let's see how things go for a couple more years until we make him the second coming of Dave Duncan.

funny, i had meant to write that if motte developed another PITCH that he could be devastating, but with the typo it sort of read like if duncan could develop another pitcher he'd be devastating. true, but oops.
