Trade Deadline Thread

https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/mlb-rumors-giants-cardinals-talking-will-smith-trade-deadline?cid=Yahoo&partner=ya4nbcs

The best component of the team has been the bullpen, so let's go out and get a relief pitcher, right? Let's not address the atrocious offense or the inconsistencies in the starting rotation.
In the comments section of the Yahoo version of this story, a poster suggested trading Carpenter and/or Fouler to San Francisco. Why not throw in Brett Cecil and make it a really sweet deal for the Giants?

I'm afraid this, if it happens, will be another instance of the Cardinals' getting less than expected performance in return for watching whoever they send flourish under club control for years. I hope to be proven wrong.

St. Louis: Where relievers go to suck.

The rumor is O'Neill would be the centerpiece of the package they would sent to the Giants. I'm not necessarily opposed to parting with O'Neill. I see a guy who reminds me a lot of Grichuk, and I don't mean that as a compliment. His ceiling is probably .260/20/65. He'll give you a ton of strikeouts, decent speed and defense and a propensity for committing about a half-dozen egregious mistakes every season that will make you want to rip the skin off your face with your fingernails.
I presume O'Neill's future with the Cardinals is tied to Ozuna's future with the Cardinals. One would think if the Cardinals don't make the playoffs again and even hint at a starting 2020 outfield of O'Neill, Bader and Fouler, there would be rioting in the streets of St. Louis.

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

If you're hoping the Cardinals will upgrade the offense, your time would be better spent writing a letter to Santa Claus asking him to bring you a Victoria Secret angel for Christmas.  Due to Moz's genius, the entire offense, except for Bader, is locked into long-term contracts.  Unless you believe the Cardinals will put one of those long-term contracts on the bench (yeah, right) or unless you believe someone else would be dumb enough to take one of those contracts (yeah, right), the offense is what it is.  The only potential change is when Ozuna comes back, Martinez remains the everyday RFer and Bader/Fouler share CF.

If they wanted to upgrade the starting pitching, they  could have done so without giving up anything but money by signing Keuchel.  Ultimately, maybe he wouldn't have signed in St. Louis--Atlanta is clearly a better team right now.  But he was available and it cost nothing but money to acquire him.

Like always, the Cardinals are going to make a nickel and dime move and hope that in a shitty division, 85-86 wins will be enough to get them into the playoffs.  If not, they'll tell the fans the players underperformed, make an insignificant move in the off-season and wash, rinse, repeat.

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

I agree with the notion that by this clubs own, self-imposed restrains there isnt room for a move. Top end starter would be the most realistic impact move.  I dont see that as being very likely.

Andrew Cashner to the Red Sox
Homer Bailey to the Athletics, for whatever reason

Martin Maldonado to the Cubs for Headhunter Montgomery. Contreras is apparently headed to the IL with a foot injury.

Good one. The Cubs have become one of the most unlikable teams I can remember. They've completely taken on the personality of their pretentious manager. I used to think Bryant was a decent guy, until he spoke derogatorily about St. Louis. Remember, this is someone who grew up in - of all places - Las Vegas, the most wretched hive of scum and villainy in the entire country. I used to be OK with Schwarber, but now he tends to complain about everything. Every time an umpire calls a strike on him, he looks like he's chewing on Ex-Lax. Rizzo has developed what I refer to as a "perma-sneer," like a bad Draco Malfoy caricature. Russell is a spousal abuser. Baez's narcissism is well … perhaps exceeded only by Contreras'. Lester always has an expression like he's going to work on a chain gang instead of playing baseball. Strop is the only guy in the league who could make you side with Yasiel Puig. And don't get me started on Heyward. Fuck Heyward.

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

Im not sure i understand the Carlos martinez trade rumors.  If the cardinals are serious about 2019 they need him as closer.  He is a bonehead but they lack other options.  It isnt like they wont have a change to trade him this offseason as he is under contract for several more years.

I dont understand trading oniell.  It may be a chance to sell high but this offense is lacking.  They dont know what ozuna will come back.  Without oniell a ozuna, fowler, bader, martinez outfield is sickening.

Wacha...i get it.  He is useless now and a fa next year.  Ditching him for anything is better than dfa.

Bader...idk, ive sort of lost interest in him and his mendoza line average.

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

Cardinals acquire Zac Rosscup, who will be with his fourth organization this season.
I guess DeWitt can ask for permission to print playoff tickets now.

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

4th team in one year if he makes a mlb appearance for the cardinals.  Wonder what the record is.

A 5.00 ERA in 28 games (18 innings) with 19 BB. Hmm. So I take it he's a LOOGY who tends to come in, sandwich a walk and maybe a hit around two outs. At least they haven't been taking him yard, but all I can muster is "meh".

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

Honestly idk how much better this team is if yadi is off the dl.  Or if they are better at all.  Neither yadi or wieters are defensive gems at this stage in their career and wieters has some pop.

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

How bader responds to triple A will likely decide his stl career.

And whatever pen moz is using when he signs these extensions, he needs to pitch is.  His extensions are like madden cover jinxes.

Maybe he's living off his reputation alone, but teams still aren't trying to steal off Yadi. Wieters has been Moz's best acquisition of the off-season, maybe of several off-seasons. And one of Yadi's best and most underrated skills is his ability to frame pitches. Watch Knizner stab at the ball for a few innings and you'll see what I mean.
Apropos of nothing, Kelly hit his 13th home run of the season last night. That gives him as many as Molina and Wieters combined.

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

In a matter of 24 hours, the Cardinals have added two pitchers who combined to walk 32 batters in 37.1 innings.  That doesn't include the 42 hits allowed.

For those keeping track at home, that's a combined WHIP of 1.98.

That should solve all of the team's problems.

I thought yadis pitch framing metrics were average.  Idk how u measure that tho.

Re: Trade Deadline Thread

It appears that Bauer may be the only decent named starter to move, but the Nationals, Braves and Brewers all made moves to upgrade their bullpen.  Meanwhile the Cardinals do nothing, although it's being reported they traded Gyorko for nothing that helps the current major league roster.

Multiple reports he's going to the Dodgers, but no one is say what they got/if they got anything in return.
