Re: 7/22 GC

I understand the Pirates have the most intimidating lineup since the '27 Yankees, but can someone try to throw them strikes?

Re: 7/22 GC

Just walked in the house from having Madison practice driving. The first thing I see is that Wacha is pitching, and the first thing I hear is that the batter he was facing was the 9th batter with a 3-2 count, and it’s only the 4th inning.

Those 4 innings had to be unwatchable.

Has Clint Hurdle explained to everyone the proper way to play baseball yet?

Ponce de Leon had no idea where the ball was going. He threw 86 pitches to get nine outs. He had no command of any of his off-speed pitches, so he was forced to try to nibble with his fastball. He loaded the bases in the first inning with one out on a walk to Frazier, a single by Marte and a walk to Bell, struck out Moran and then Reynolds on a 3-2 pitch and skipped off the mound like he had just thrown an immaculate inning.

And the plate umpire hasn't been helping much with this tiny strike zone!

I'm watching the Pissburgh broadcast tonight because I need a break from McLaughlin. They showed an interview with Hurdle talking about why the Pirates aren't hitting. He sounded like David St. Hubbins trying to explain why Spinal Tap broke up.

Re: 7/22 GC

Artie--switching teams for a minute--what's the local vibe on Rafael Devers?  I know he was highly regarded, and I know he's super young, but he hit .240 last season and this season he's hitting almost .330.  Is the feeling that this year's version is legit?  Granted, a lot of the Boston media consists of fan boys, so maybe the Boston media is the wrong source to ask.  But I'm curious what the current thoughts are.

Bob Walk spent a half-inning explaining the difference between a hit-and-run and a straight steal.

The skinny on Devers is the Red Sox rushed him to the majors in 2017 because they literally didn't have another third baseman after they released Sandoval. They were willing to live with his defensive deficiencies as long as his OPS was in the .800 range, but his production dipped last year and he started losing at bats to Eduardo Nunez. I think if you asked the Red Sox in an honest moment they would say what he's giving them this year is what the hoped for but didn't expect. When everything settles, he's probably a .275-.280/20-25/75-80 guy,. But they just released Nunez, so he's going to be the guy.

Did you see the dive he made on the routine fly ball to O'Neill?

Re: 7/22 GC

Holy schnieckies. Goldschmidt didn't barrel that, didn't get any of his bottom half behind the ball and still hit it into the fucking river.

It'll probably make someone's blooper reel tomorrow. I believe you Midwesterners refer to such behavior as "showing your ass."

Thanks.  Besides the absurd raw numbers he's putting up this year, one number that stuck out was 30 doubles.  I remember a certain LH 3B that made a pretty good living serving fly balls off of the monster.  I don't know if most of Devers' doubles have come to LF or pulling balls to RF, but if its the former, that's a good sign for a young hitter.

Yeah.  Him hitting balls like that make me think that this year is more about him putting too much pressure on himself because of new team, new contract.  Arizona is a launching pad, but Goldschmidt's power hasn't been the issue, so I don't think it's a concern like I'd have if he had come from Colorado.  He just isn't hitting the ball well.  I find it hard to believe a career .297 hitter became a .240 hitter that quickly.

Re: 7/22 GC

If Martinez was already throwing, why even bother letting Shreve start the inning?
