My neighbor and I are both grilling tonight. He gushes "Red Sox are ahead, 8-3!" I replied "What inning, the second?"

I'm by myself tonight, so I went with boneless spare ribs, baked beans and cole slaw. It's not real barbecue, but it's the best I can do around here.

Re: 7/27 GC

We just got back from softball. This is the last tournament of the year, then she gets a couple weeks off before high school practices begin.

We also got the boy back from college for a couple of weeks he goes back August 13.

Not grilling tonight. Just threw some chicken breasts in the oven and gonna make some mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli to go with. Maybe go out later for some dessert.

Madison has at least one more game tomorrow. Single elimination tournament, so there could be as many as 4 games. Going into tomorrow, she’s hitting .525 (52 for 99). I’m pretty sure she’s leading the team in every offensive category except HRs (she’s 1 back). Her coach also finally moved her back to CF after playing her at SS all season. Some of the girls who will join the team next year are playing this weekend, including our new SS. In 3 games in CF, Madison has already made 2 catches no one else in our outfield can make and she has 3 assists.

It’ll be interesting to see how she handles the jump in competition next year.

Re: 7/27 GC

I continue to be amazed that pitchers who possess a 95 mph fastball won't throw strikes.

Judging how by 95mph pitches are hit anymore i have a few option to choose from:

A. They throw so straight it is very hitable

B.  Hitter have advanced so much that 95mph isnt what it used to be

C.  They are not really throwing 95mph

It's hard to find a good barbecue sauce. Most of them are too sweet. I like Montgomery Inn's chipotle sauce, but you have to have it shipped. Trader Joe's used to make a good sauce, but the store here went out of business. I used Stubbs tonight.

There was a robbery from the one of the Kohl's in Eastern Massachusetts a few years ago, and the thieves stole around $125,000 worth of jewelry. Who knew Kohl's carried that much worth of jewelry?

I like sweet, so i go with sweet baby rays.  I like the asian zing sauce at buffalo wild wings as well.  Walmart carried a generic that i use.

If you like ribs one thing we do is buy lloyds bbq ribs.  They are pre cooked and easy.  Menards has them on sale for 9.99 from time to time.  We just throw them in the crock pot for a few hrs on low and you have a decent meal.  They are not high end ribs but they are pretty damn good for 10 bucks and no effort.

Mostly the former, a little of the latter. I told you about all of the drama that happened a month ago. For the most part, things have been pretty good since then. But two of Madison’s best friends on this year’s team won’t be on next year’s team because both will turn 17 before January 1, so tomorrow will likely be the last time she plays with either of them. That part will be bittersweet.

One of them did try out for, and make the 18U team of the the new program Madison is playing for next season, but the other one tried out and didn’t make it.

I’m going to be curious how Madison responds to next year’s changes. This new organization gives her a lot more opportunities, and now that she’s 16, she will be able to take advantage of those opportunities without bothering me or her mother. But all of that presumes she takes care of her business in the classroom. Both independence and the ability to dive deeply into her softball are at her fingertips. It’s all up to her and how she handles her schoolwork.

Here’s a link to the new practice facility.

Re: 7/27 GC

So we were one and done today. I was a little off with her numbers, but she did finish over .500 (54 for 104) for the season. She was 1 for 1 today with a HBP.

We had a scary moment in today’s game. Other team had a runner on third and our pitcher threw a wild pitch. Most of the fields we play on have pretty short distances to the back stop and this was not exception. The catcher got to the ball and flipped it to the pitcher covering home just as the runner was sliding in. The pitcher swiped the tag and caught the runner right under the chin, whipping her head back and causing her to hit her head on the ground. The runner never lost consciousness, but for the first few minutes she couldn’t move her extremities.

Feeling and movement came back after about 5 minutes or so, but she was taken off to the hospital by paramedics. We received an update this evening. She’s fine, but had some disc injury.

Yikes. Back injuries tend to be cumulative, especially if they involve the spinal column.
I'm surprised there aren't a lot more injuries in softball than there are, given the speed of the ball on a field with those dimensions. Watching this year's NCCA tournament, I seemed to see more pitchers wearing the face mask, and I've even seen some corner infielders wearing them. Is there some sort requirement for the face mask, or is it still entirely optional at this point?
