Presuming the Cubs don't come back, the Cardinals will have a 4.5-game lead with three weeks to play.

Although it was before any of our times (except for Mags), does anyone else's brain always flash to the 1964 Phillies' collapse as a caution against overconfidence in this type of situation? A six-game lead with twelve to play, and the Cardinals ended up world champs (there were no divisions and no playoffs back then).

They still have to play the Cubs seven times. I'm just looking for a bit of an enhanced buffer.
And the Cardinals have the benefit of not having Gene Mauch in their dugout.

They’re playing great right now. I wish they didn’t have to go into Colorado. That place has been a disaster for the Cardinals most years. I guess if they have to go there, it’s good that it’s September and they have the extra bullpen arms, but I hate having to go in there now when they’ve been playing so well.

I figure .500 ball from here on out gets them in the playoffs. Of course the goal should be winning the division.

I'm also looking for that enhanced buffer. And I've been doing the hopeful speculation as much as anyone, short of calculating srebmun cigam. I was just observing how that '64 finish always keeps me (overly) cautious.

According to Baseball Reference, the Cardinals have a 97 percent chance of making the playoffs and an 88.2 percent chance of winning the division.
