A couple months ago I'd have replied that I'd love to see him picked up for 2022 so he might have a shot at hitting his 700th HR in St Louis. After his disappointing numbers down the stretch, he'll probably be available, unless he decides to retire, but the likelihood he can hit 21 dingers as a pinch-hitter restricted to lefties seems pretty low.

Jeff Albert was Moz’s “star” coaching hire. Albert’s hitting philosophy is try to hit everything to the pull-side foul pole because pitching has become so specialized that bunching together hits is a low probability strategy. Exit velocity, launch angle and probable outcomes became more important than actual results.

Around the All-Star break, Schildt told hitters to stop pulling balls into the shift and to approach at-bats as they felt comfortable. In particular, take pitches the other way if that’s where the pitcher is pitching the ball. The team started having success by ignoring Albert’s philosophy. Schildt wasn’t going to employ Albert’s philosophy in 2022, and Moz is determined to prove to everyone that he’s smarter than everyone in MLB. Schildt had to go.
