Roster Takes Shape

Matt Carpenter among today's cuts.  The bench is Laird, Greene, Descalso, Jay and Craig

Four relievers (Salas, Sanchez, Batista and Augenstein) fighting for the last 2 bullpen spots (presumably the others are Franklin, Motte, Boggs, Miller and Tallet)

McClellan officially the 5th starter

We should run a pool on the date Descalso will be sent to Memphis for the first time.
Put me down for April 22.

I think it is best they are going to give Carpenter everyday playing time at Memphis.  My guess is that Salas and Batista get the final bullpen spots.

Is  Oliver Perez worth a look?

Given that the Mets' spring training site is about an hour away, I would hope they've already looked, but based on this assessment, I'd say Ollie is done.

"Perez's velocity has hovered mostly in the 85 mph range this spring. That might be enough for a control pitcher such as fellow left-hander Chris Capuano to succeed, but it left no margin for error with Perez, who has had control problems.

'The velocity was not there. The command was not there,' Alderson said. 'It wasn't going to work in a starting role. It didn't appear as if it were going to work in a relief role, at least anytime soon.'"

Re: Roster Takes Shape

"I think they gave me an opportunity," he said. "They were fair with me when I came here. 'We're going to give you an opportunity to be a starter.' I didn't do anything great. They moved me to the bullpen trying to be a lefty specialist. And the last game, that was a real horrible job."

Those are astonishingly honest comments from a professional baseball player. I think under the terms of the CBA, Ollie has to be given another shot with someone under the "left-handed and breathing" codicil, also known as the  "Fassero Principle."

Ollie should be the face of the Minaya regime.

No one would have cared if the Wilpons and the Katz hadn't gotten tied up with Bernie Madoff. Who knew that scandal would have such a happy ending?

Speaking of Pond Scum, R.A. Dickey pitched well today against a Cardinals' lineup that was lacking several regulars who La Russa didn't want to screw up by having them face stupid knuckleballs. Craig hit a 3-run homer after Dickey left, and Westbrook pitched into the sixth and allowed one unearned run.
