Matt Holliday- Bargain

I'm not even going to attempt to suggest that I understand how this figure is calculated, but I thought it might be a discussion starter.

"Is Matt Holliday worth his $17 million salary for 2010? According to fangraphs.com, which puts a dollar figure on the value of a player's overall performance, Holliday is having a season worth $24.2 million. Only 10 major-league players have a higher value, including Albert Pujols, who ranks eighth with a value of $24.8 million. Among major-league left fielders, Holliday went into the weekend ranked second in homers, second in RBIs and second in combined onbase-slugging percentage. He was also rated third-best defensively among LFs in the John Dewan Fielding Bible ratings."

BTW, I certainly don't regret that Cowboy is unlikely to ever find this board, but I'd love to hear him argue against the numbers.

Re: Matt Holliday- Bargain

The random blogger has a recent post full of stats like these, including that Brendan Ryan is one of the best fielders in the baseball, and that our upgrade at 3B is the worst player in baseball.

So long as AAAron Miles remains in the league, I believe he has the worst player in baseball distinction locked up.  But he plays the game the right way.

Re: Matt Holliday- Bargain

I would love to have someone try to explain how they assess a value to a player's season.  For example, what's the baseline?  League average?  I'd love to see the formula being used.

Re: Matt Holliday- Bargain

A fine read, but in typical WSJ fashion the notion that the two highest-payroll teams in each league have the best records and would probably be considered the favorites to win the pennant and stage a re-match in the World Series warrants only an "Oh by the way ..." mention.
Except for Katrina and Rita, 2005 was a year that didn't have an especially bad hurricane season.

BTW, in who's estimation other than AP's is Russell Branyan higher on the pecking order than Adam Kennedy? I know he sucked as a Cardinal, but Kennedy has a World Series ring and if memory serves was an ALCS MVP. Branyan's only possible claim to fame is he could have been the stunt double for the Whammer in "The Natural."

Yeah, the pecking order needs a couple of tweaks.  Did Larry Bigbie actually ever play a game for the Cardinals?  HWSNBN was brutal, but he was something like 31 for 33 against Clemens.  That alone gives him some value.

Re: Matt Holliday- Bargain

I think we had a discussion not too long ago on the dysfunctional discussion board that many of us once visited on the subject of whether Holliday played hard.  Last night's catch probably put an end to it anyway but I think I posted something at the time about Ken Boyer once being accused of not playing hard and how he had emerged as a leader on the team in the 60's.

Purely by accident, I just ran across the article that had left an impression on me about Boyer and how he had answered the charges.  I think I read this article.  Anyway, his comments are the same ones I remembered.

It's a good read anyway:

If the g__ damned stats people hadn't taken over baseball decision making, Boyer would have been in the HOF years ago.
