Getting Ready for Opening Day

St. Louis had 6 inches of snow that fell Saturday.  Fortunately, it had been 80 degrees earlier in the week, so between the ground temperature, the sun and yesterday's 45 degree temperatures, most of it is gone.

Now they're predicting more snow tomorrow night, although I haven't heard any word on accumulation.  I hope the trucks that drive the players into the stadium are equipped with snow tires.  Berkman may not survive the Opening Day introductions.

Re: Getting Ready for Opening Day

The game is on ESPN. I might be coming down with a cold that's probably going to require me to be on the couch at about 2 p.m. on Thursday.

They must really like what they've seen from Augenstein.

Both have had awesome springs with 12ish innings pitched and .7ish ERAs.  Salas has walk more and SO less.  I also think Augenstein is more of an inning guy.  With Westbrook and Garcia both fighting to find there stuff maybe they want a long guy.  It isnt that big of deal because I am sure Salas will be up sooner then later.  Maybe they should have left Batista off the roster but if they did that they lose him.  The more I think about it the more I understand it.

The story in the P-D indicated it was a decision based on innings.  Augenstein used to be a starter, so they thought he could take on more innings.  I didn't realize how young he is.  According to the Cardinal website, Augenstein is only 24.  For some reason, I thought he was more of a guy who had bounced around the big leagues a bit.

DBack just gave him away.  The Cardinals might have got a steal.

Re: Getting Ready for Opening Day

Yeah, I thought I read that Augenstein was like 40? I think someone had their information wrong.

Anyway, he's been very hittable the last couple of seasons in the minors. Strikeouts are good and walks are good, but he must be laying a lot of stuff in the zone.

Re: Getting Ready for Opening Day

Right field defense is going to be a problem. I listened to the game today and Westbrook's line is worse than he pitched because Fudgie the Whale couldn't get his fat arse to a couple of fly balls in the third inning. Westbrook would have been out of the inning 1-2-3 if Hanley's popup hadn't fallen in front of him. Westbrook also had to pitch out of a jam in the second inning because Berkman couldn't get to another popup. And the Marlins' announcers said the wind, which I guess can be a factor at Roger Dean, was as calm as it's been all spring today.

Well!  It seems like I have a lot to learn about this team this year!  Fudgie the Whale?

That photo is a little misleading since it was taken when Fudgie was on the winter banquet tour, before ST started.

It's never really been formally revealed, Web. There's sort of a discovery process.

Well, I noticed there are a couple of newbies that started as Aaron Miles.  I couldn't remember but did we start out as Aaron?

Re: Getting Ready for Opening Day

Looks like a favorable weather forcast - mid-50s and partly cloudy on Thursday, crummy on the Friday off day, and then warmer for the weekend with a chance of a thundershower on Sunday.
Any snow cover left in the Loo, Fors?

No.  They anticipated snow storm last night was just a little rain.  The temperatures didn't get cold enough for any solid precipitation.  The 6 inches we got on Saturday was all gone by Sunday.  That's what happens when it snows on ground that has been basking in 70-80 degree temperatures for a week or more.

I'll have to take your word for it since I haven't seen an outdoor thermometer at 70 degrees since last September. We're supposed to get as much as a half-foot of snow on Friday. Have I mentioned before how much I hate the weather in New England?
