4/4 Gamecrap

Cards lead 1-0 after two innings. Discuss.

Re: 4/4 Gamecrap

Lohse looks great through four. Hitting his spots, changing speeds, keeping the ball down. Good stuff so far.

Re: 4/4 Gamecrap

Once they clear the third spot in the order, the Cardinals have a decent lineup.

Re: 4/4 Gamecrap

Ricky Horton provided more insight in the top of the fifth inning than Joe Morgan did during two decades of Sunday nights.

Re: 4/4 Gamecrap

Pujols cant hit the ball out of the infield.  Lohse still sucks.  Berkman and Craig are the best hitters in the lineup.

Those at-bats by Freese and Molina were disgusting.

Molina had an awesome at bat earlier in the game.  I have no clue how many pitches he seen but it was alot.  Descalso didnt even come close to hitting anything but Berkman looked good.  He still doesnt give away at bats.  Pujols has left 13 runners on base this year so far and hit into 4 DP.  His HR was a solo shot.  He has got to start producing or this season is going to be done before it even starts.

Re: 4/4 Gamecrap

Freese swinging at pitches that nearly take off his knee-caps, 2 K's , and 5 runners on base during his "appearances" .

Re: 4/4 Gamecrap

Morton is due credit for pitching well, but I thought the Cardinals should have been more patient. Every time he threw a ball, he was coming with that cutter that starts on the inside corner on the next pitch. It's a great pitch because it looks like a strike and then breaks in under your thumbs, but at some point, you've got to have the discipline to lay off it. Even if you make contact, all you're going to do is hit a weak ground ball to the left side. He's not going to throw that sloppy curve anywhere near the plate, so you can spit at that, get ahead in the count and then make him have to throw a strike. The only one who did that last night was Berkman.
And I haven't seen a major league hitter overmatched like Descalso was with Hanrahan in a long time. With the exception of Meek, who lived up to his name last night, props to the Pirates' pitching staff. And how many times in the last five years have we been able to say that?

Re: 4/4 Gamecrap

They showed Berkman telling Skip about the inside pitch after he walked and scored a run.  He had it figured out.  You would think the others would as well.  Pujols has just got to stop trying to be superhuman and take what he is given.

I couldn't see it, but his line looks pretty good.  5 Ks, 1 BB.  WHIP = 1.0 and ERA = 5.14, sounds like the bad guys got lucky more than that Lohse sucked.

All things considered, Lohse pitched well.

Yeah, I saw that. I looked like he was telling him to lay off the cutter on the inside corner because Morton wasn't getting the same break as he was when he threw it to the righties. Most pitchers approach lefties and righties differently, so whatever advice Berkman gave to Skip wouldn't have benefitted Pujols. If you look closely in the dugout, you'll usually see the lefties talking to the lefties and the righties talking to the righties almost exclusively.
I spent most of my high school career batting second behind a lefty leadoff hitter. You normally want the leadoff hitter to take some pitches so you can get a read on the pitcher, but after awhile, I tended to not even pay attention to the leadoff hitter's at bats, other than to see how hard the pitcher was throwing. Especially if a lefty was on the mound. Lefty pitchers are so intent upon making lefty hitters look foolish with their curve they almost froth at the mouth.

The pitch McCutcheon hit over the fence was a cripple, but the pitch Walker hit was pretty good, just up a little bit. The real shame in that inning was giving up the single to Ronnie Cedeno on a good pitch, and then he walked Tabata. I think he got pissed and lost his concentration.

He was busting right handed hitters inside all night long.  Not even the inside corner.  They were swinging at pitches well off the plate.  Not even Pujols can take a pitch 6 inches off the inside corner and hit it past the third baseman.

It doesn't really mean much. Last night was nasty weather-wise. The Cubs drew their smallest crowd in nine years yesterday.

TK, I think you ought to be owed a royalty every time Al refers to Theriot as "gritty."

There were probably about 10K left for the final out, Max. And it wasn't a blowout. I was cold just watching the game on TV.

You'll need a good lawyer. Maybe Fors knows one.

Don't look at me. I just lost a bench trial that my 10 year old should have been able to win. I'd elaborate, but the Rules of Professional Conduct prohibit criticizing a judge, even when it's obvious he was more confused than Mike Shannon working the World Baseball Classic.
