Scorers are media members who are supposed to be independent of the clubs/league. They don't travel. There are two problems with the system. First, most of the major papers don't let their employees be official scorers anymore, so the scorer is usually some hack from the Podunk Tattler who's happened to pay his BBWAA membership fee 10 years in a row. Second, the scorer gets a stipend over and above what the newspaper pays him for being at the game anyway, so no one ever gives up that job willingly and more often than not the scorer is a 90-year-old guy with bad eyesight who spends half the game in the bathroom changing his Depends.

The unfortunate thing is the pitching in innings 1-8 has been mostly good, and Garcia has been superb. Even Miggy was good last night. I don't know how much of a product that's been on the weak lineups they've faced, but in any event you hate to waste good pitching.5 quality starts and 2 victories to show for it. And Lohse was darned close to a 6th QS. And for all that, the starting rotation is 1-3.
Ryan Franklin's line is looking horrible, with 1 save to go along with 3 blown saves, a 9.82 ERA, and 2 BB to go along with 2 K's, in 3.2 IP.
With 20/20 hindsight, the $8 million for Berkman might have been better spent getting a reliable closer, playing Craig everyday, and using Franklin in a set-up role.I may be wrong, but if my memory serves, the only quality closers on the FA market were Rivera and his new set up guy (Soriano), and both cost a lot more than $8M.
For a-list relief/closers, yes. The Cards can rarely afford a-list fa pitchers. It's hard to say if Fuentes would have been a solid closer, but at least it would have given us another proven lefty. We'd have to retread a lot of water, going back to when Franklin got an extension to work this one through properly. The club was saying they simply didn't have the money to spend, but with hindsight, opening day payroll this season pretty much proves that was a cover story for keeping some dry powder.

OK. So then there is no good reason not charge Rasmus with the error.Didnt see the play but ruling it a error would have taken a hit away from the batter. It is an away game. The scored ruled in favor of the home team. It happens most the time.
I understand why it was a hit, but considering the so-called sanctity of statistics in baseball, the should be a more uniform system of official scoring. I the Giants' centerfielder drops that ball it's an error and the pitcher doesn't get the earned runs.
then again, maybe not . . .
