good piece by Strauss

"Cards offense down in recent seasons"

I particularly like his take that 2003 was really the high-water mark except that a "ruinous bullpen hijacked the '03 teams playoff chances."  I remember working out W-L based on RPG, and it was ridiculous.  My recollection is that they had a losing record for all RPG<10.

Did you happen to catch this part?

"Numerous theories have been advanced regarding the team's relative offensive fade:

A segment of the fan base that disregards a franchise-record season-opening payroll of more than $107 million likes to allege tightfisted ownership."

Re: good piece by Strauss

LOL!  Why, yes, I did.

Did you happen to catch this?

"An excellent piece, but you devalue your own argument with the statement "A segment of the fan base that disregards a franchise-record season-opening payroll of more than $107 million likes to allege tightfisted ownership." The reality is that the loss of depth that you accurately note coincides with the budget tightening of 09-10. Throw the switch from Jocketty to Mozeliak into the mix, and maybe also the influence that the Luhnow system held, briefly, that we would develop our way to a contender, and a tight payroll for a couple of seasons stands out as one of the probably reasons that the team suffered from lack of depth."

I rarely read the comments on the P-D website.  Many of the posters are barely literate.  Is that yours or someone else's?

Re: good piece by Strauss

I hadn't even looked until now.  Never get tired of Bartman.

Re: good piece by Strauss

the funny thing in the photo is the determined concentration in the face of bartman as he inadvertently steals away his beloved cubbies' chance to end the curse.  (well, that and the headphones, that kind of indicate his detachedness from what was going on).

it's one of those ironic contrasts that artists sometimes capture, such as the scene at the end of Dr. Strangelove, when it is only through the determined patriotic effort and American-know-how-edness of Slim Pickens' character that the world is destroyed.

(FWIW: I had the name, Weeping Grammas Forever, before I had a logo, and I searched the internet for a long time to find that image of the crying grandmother at Wrigley Field, but for some reason that has not become as iconic as Bartman).
