2011 NFL Draft

Some predictions:

Cam Newton, likely to be the next JaMarcus Russell, will go No. 1.

Blaine Gabbert falls to Minnesota at No. 12.

Jake Locker is the year's Tebow Pick and goes to Washington at No. 10. He's out of the league in three years.

De'Quan Bowers and his torn up knee somehow stay in the Top 15, even though he should be at the end of Round 1.

Mark Ingram and his reconstructed knee goes to New England in the first round. The Patriots also draft Christian Ponder in the second round.

Nick Fairley is this year's Aaron Rodgers.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Atlanta trades this year's 2nd and 4th and next year's 1st and 4th for Julio Jones.

There's no way wide receiver was a need for Atlanta. What a weird trade.

I was close on Locker. What a disaster that will be.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Ponder was a massive reach. They obviously couldn't find anyone to trade down with. He'd have been available about 20 picks later.

I like the Quinn pick. That kid was a top 5 talent. Screwed up last year with the agent party thing. The NCAA is a joke. Cam Newton probably made more lsst year than I did, but he plays the whole year. This kid goes to a party and has to sit. Makes perfect sense.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Yeah, the Rams and Cardinals both made out like bandits. Peterson had no business getting past Denver or Buffalo.

Fairley will be in jail by the second preseason game.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

I have not even heard anyone talking about Ponder.  It leaves me to ponder what the fuck they were thinking.

Cam Jordan at 24 is a steal.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Ponder was a kid who was rising on a lot of draft boards and there was thought he would sneak into the first round.  But a month or two ago he would have probably been available at the Vikings second round pick.

He's a bit small for a QB (6'2") and doesn't have a big arm, but he's pretty accurate and had a real good Senior Bowl.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

So will Long and Quinn. I can't get over how great this is for the Rams. If not for Tennessee and Minny's stupidity, they wouldn't have landed the best defensive end. Now we just have to hope his brain tumor stays benign.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

I about spit out my drink after the Gabbert pick when they announced that the last time 3 QBs were taken in the top 10, it was Tim Couch, Akili Smith and Donovan McNabb.

For Gabbert's sake, I hope he's the "McNabb" of that trio.

I have to assume the medical staff did its due diligence on the tumor. You have to love the upside of that pick.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

"Cam Newton, likely to be the next JaMarcus Russell,"

My thought exactly. Who would have thought four QBs would go in the first 12 picks and none of them would be named Ryan Mallett? I'm hoping he's gone by the time the Raiders finally get on the clock, because Davis won't be able to help himself if Marinovich ... errr, Mallett is still out there.
I don't know what problems Fairley has off the field that would land him in jail as TK suggests, but I do know he was the best player on the field in the BCS Championship game.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

I was just kidding. He's an extremely dirty player from all accounts, but he's also very good. There's also a chance he's a one-year wonder.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

So the Vikings had a chance to grab a top talent defensive lineman to relace the one hey are losing (Pat Williams) and one that will be suspended for 4 games (Kevin Williams) and drafted a second round QB instead.

could be.  but fwiw, he's big news here (well, there) because he's from ferndale, which is in the same league as my town's high school.  so it's the top headline story back home.

When Yoo Dub signed Locker, he was billed as having Vince Young's legs, Steve Young's arm and Joe Montana's savvy. He turned out to be Bobby Douglass.

So that's what Michael Smith looks like. You usually can't see his face because he's got his lips on Belichick's butt.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

I'm definitely not a scout and hate when people have knee-jerk reactions to players on Draft Day, but with Locker...at some point the talent has to equal results. I know Washington had bad talent around him, but Jay Cutler had worse talent in a much tougher conference and he was no slouch. Fifty-five percent completion rate? That's just not good.
