Re: Floppy Gone

He's been released. Mozeliak said it's because he was late to yesterday's game.

Good riddance.

Looked to me like he "officially" said it was because it was pointless to keep him on the roster if he wasnt going to play and he isnt going to play.  I think it is nice to see them remove someone who can only take playing time away from the younger guys.  At this point doing that would be stupid.  Now why is Randy Winn and Miles still around?

I thought that was in response to his being late, as in: in order to discipline him for being late, repeateduly, he was going to be benched.  Seeing as he was going to be benched, and there's not much of the season left, . . . "it was either just not play him or allow him to go home.â€

Re: Floppy Gone

A report by MLB.com states the San Diego Padres have placed a waiver claim on released Cardinals infielder Felipe Lopez. The Cardinals made the move after Lopez arrived late to the park before Monday's make-up game against the Florida Marlins.

Could this guy be in the post season ?

Re: Floppy Gone

The Padres just keep adding guys.  Half of there team wasnt even on the roster in April.

Re: Floppy Gone

Turns out Floppy denied San Diego's waiver claim and will sign with the Red Sox instead.

"Why would the Red Sox want him at this point? Among other reasons, one industry source said the Red Sox made the move so that they would receive a compensatory draft pick if someone signs him on the free agent market this winter."

. . . perhaps, but when you go from 25 to 40, pretty much half the guys couldn't have been on the roster in april.

"Why would the Red Sox want him at this point?"

To make Mike Lowell feel like he's not retiring as the third baseman with the most limited range in the major leagues?

Wouldnt that be a good reason for the Cardinals to keep him on the roster for another week or two?  They could have still sent him home.  Smart move on the Red Sox's part.  If it works they end up paying a few weeks of the pro-rated minimum for a draft pick.

Re: Floppy Gone

They'd still have to offer him arbitration. I wouldn't take the risk of Floppy accepting it.

There's that, and he sucks. Why would anyone sign a free agent who can't hit anymore, doesn't have a defensive position and shows up late to games?

Because a GM went into April without a backup third baseman, second baseman and SS.  Even Joe Thurston found a job before Flip.  By the time DeWitt signed the check he was the only option.  But hey, he was good enough to allow the team to trade Lugo and wait for the Reds to dumb Miles.

I was thinking about next season, but you make a valid point. I had modest expectations for him this year, but I expected him to hit better than .240 or whatever.

I was for the signing as well.  Anyone who has ever looked at a MLB roster could see we had no backup in about 3 positions.  And they still didnt have all year untill Sept callups.

Re: Floppy Gone

On the MLB network last night, I was subjected to some highlights of the Yanks/Sox series.  Lopez played quite a bit at second, where he made an outstanding play, as well as at third, where he treated them to another one of those throws that cost the Cards several games over the second half of the season.

I believe the diving stop was in the game they lost and the 6 bounce throw to first was in the game they won.  But that's the American League.

He also hit a home run.
