You all remember Leon, right? He was the character in the Budweiser commercials who blamed everyone else for his own failings. My personal favorite was the one when the sportscaster mentions his 5 fumbles, and Leon blamed his teammates for not recovering any of them.
Well apparently Edinson Volquez has decided to channel his inner Leon. How else do you explain a pitcher who, following a start in which he allowed 7 runs and failed to get out of the 3rd inning, decides to throw his offense under the bus.
“Everybody has to step up,†he said, “start to score some runs. In the last five games, how many runs have we scored? Like 13? That’s not the way we were playing last year. We’re better than that.â€
Priceless

He has a point. If they had scored 13 runs yesterday, they would have overcome his lousy pitching.
Unfortunately for the Reds and their devoted fans, a team comprised of people of questionable character inevitably falls short of its goals, precisely due to its lack of character. I believe this is referred to in the behavioral community as the "Schottenheimer Phenomenon."

Here's more funny TTIB news: Aroldis Chapman begins his rehab assignment tonight, a week after being put on the DL. Golly, it's almost like this ultra-classy, never-do-wrong organization was gaming the integrity of the Disabled List.

Leon just got optioned to the minors.
There's a novel concept. Get rid of a non-performer. Too bad we can't do the same with Franklin or Batista.

Wow, that's big news about Volquez.

I wonder who take his place. Leake and Wood have not been good either.

Since May 15, the Phillies hadn't had at least four hits in an inning until they unloaded on Arroyo in the third inning tonight.
If the human ear was able to detect sounds from 2,000 miles away, you guys would be hearing me laughing.

I don't suppose you get a Brenneman since they're in Philly. Now that would be entertaining.

Well, Volquez was right.

I was on my way home from work, and I got the Phillies' radio version. EI only has the Phillies' TV. It's a Brennaman-free night, which would usually be a good thing.

Batista isn't horrible, and probably deserves a role as long reliever and spot starter. His ERA is decent, 2.76. But the funny thing about him is that he pitchers like a starter, his effectiveness goes markedly up after the first 15 pitches, in contrast to relievers. Considering that he is basically an over the hill starter who still throws some pepper, maybe it isn't that funny that he is better in longer outings.

Batista's WHIP is 1.78. That's in the Franklin zone of awful.

I read that Volquez article and was just scanning through the posts here to see if someone else noticed. Can you imagine if Franklin makes this same speech? Vol needs to shut up.
