9/3 gamecrap

Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran, who suffered an injury to his left knee trying to make a sliding catch on a foul ball Sunday in Washington, is out of the Cardinals' lineup today, replaced by rookie Matt Carpenter.

Carpenter, who started the only two games the Cardinals have won out of their past six, will be at first base and Allen Craig will move to right field as the Cardinals play the New York Mets here for the first time since last September.

Righthanded reliever Victor Marte, who has spent much of the season with the club, has been recalled from Class AAA Memphis to give the Cardinals a ninth arm in the bullpen.

Cardinals lineup:

Jay cf

Carpenter 1b

Holliday lf

Craig rf

Molina c

Freese 3b

Schumaker 2b

Descalso ss

Kelly p

Mets lineup:

Ruben Tejada SS

Daniel Murphy 2B

David Wright 3B

Ike Davis 1B

Lucas Duda LF

Mike Baxter RF

Kelly Shoppach C

Andres Torres CF

Collin McHugh P

Re: 9/3 gamecrap

That slide was nothing that injured Beltran.  Any real right fielder would have got there standing up.  Also Craig seem fine in the field but always look slow rounding third.

Didn't he get kudos for aggressive baserunning that led to a recent win? I'm willing to accept the premise that his body just isn't up to the challenge right now, but I rarely see actual plays.

Most of his laziness is in the outfield. In an effort to make up for his lack of hustle, announcers have acclaimed his smoothness, and how graceful he is. That's BS. Jon Jay has to make far too many plays in right-center field that other right fielders make easily . The play in foul territory the other day shows he clearly did not start running until he got about 10 feet from the foul-line. Had he started out hustling, he would have made the play. This is not a first for him, probably won't be the last ....

Then there's the whole other thing with his bat ....

Re: 9/3 gamecrap

Not to denigrate what Beltran has done for our team in 2012, injuries happen, but this time of the year all teams get banged up in some form or fashion . But I've watched almost every Cardinals game this year , as well as others; I believe I can recognize when lack of hustle hurts our team ....Take Holliday for example, he can look like a complete doofus out there sometimes, but he is wide open in his "doofusness"...

Yeah, I though he went after it a little too casually until the last 25 feet or so, when he saw he had a shot at it. I've never bought that "Beltran doesn't waste any motion ..." line the Cardinals were trying to feed us in the first half. He's never going to be compared to Pete Rose.

Almost never, and certainly not in the ninth inning of a 1-run game. I didn't see a conclusive replay, but Torres didn't grouse, so I guess he didn't have a problem with the call.
The one thing you don't normally see when a guy misses a base is the umpire stare at the bag like that. I think that more than anything tipped off the Cardinals. The umpire might as well have raised a red flag like an Olympic judge when a triple jumper commits a foul.

Re: 9/3 gamecrap

Shannon was going nuts on the radio.  The way he called it made it almost seem like someone listening to the game informed the Cardinals dugout.  I assume that the Cardinals have people in the clubhouse watching the game on TV for moments like that?

Don, I disagree with the idea that Beltran is lazy. After seeing his total lack of power and the way his offense has become so non-existent, I'd say his knee has gotten worse. Strauss said he was limping out of the stadium after Sunday's game. To me, it looks like Beltran knows his knee is going to explode. The guy simply isn't healthy enough to go at full speed.

Re: 9/3 gamecrap

It's gotten so bad with Beltran and they are so bereft of outfield help that Mozeliak said they are considering bringing up Taveras when the Springfield season ends.

Re: 9/3 gamecrap

Lazy is a strong term , I know , but as JV pointed out, there have been examples of baserunning (very few lately , since he hasn't been on base much ),where he seems to have an extra burst of speed . If he can exhibit some explosiveness on the basepaths, why not in the outfield . He's worn down / hurting , I agree but I've seen some of the same; (taking plays off), prior to the all-star game . And I've seen it discussed on other board forums  as well . I like the guy well enough, but if I'm pitching , I'd like to know my outfielders are going to go hard after balls , and if not get someone out there who can . By the same token , if I'm an outfielder, I'd like to think my pitcher is giving it everything he's got as well .

Re: 9/3 gamecrap

Carpenter just needs to play more.  He should have been the whole time.  He helped out again tonight.

My guess is that it's easier on his knees to break into sprint once he's already running. Lance Berkman was the same way a year ago. Acceleration takes a toll on the knees.

"Acceleration takes a toll on the knees."

Deceleration is worse. I don't stop on fast breaks any more. I just keep running full speed until I hit the pad behind the basket.

Motte said it was Molina who told him to appeal to first. Those Puerto Rican guys all look alike anyway.

"I disagree with the idea that Beltran is lazy."

His knee may be giving him problems, but he gave the play we're talking about the courtesy jog until he figured out too late the ball was playable. If he had gone the first 50 feet the way he did the last 15 he would have had that thing in his back pocket and he wouldn't have had to worry about hitting the dirt.

There's almost always someone in the clubhouse watching the tube. In Boston, they send out for chicken and beer and play poker while the game is on.

Yeah. It's just like all them politicians they're trotting out at both conventions. How come they go to other states to get elected? Couldn't they just stay and be mayor of Puerto Rico (errr)?

I don't know if it's like this in other parts of the country, but anyone around here who looks remotely Hispanic is referred to by a certain demographic as "Puerto Rican" (pronounced locally as "Pautareekin") no matter what their actual ancestry is.
Which is a segue into one of the more unintentionally funny moments ever, when I heard over a police scanner an officer once ask if the house translator was fluent in "Brazilian."
