Re: Hot Stove Crap

It's not the worst move they could have made, especially if they're serious about giving Yadi more rest. He's capable defensively, and he's a switch-hitter, though the latter trait won't be much of a factor because Matheny doesn't use his backup catcher to pinch-hit.

I don't think Mozeliak needs to defend his record of not splurging on free agents. I don't think another NL team has won as many games as the Cardinals since 2009. That said, they need to pay up this winter.

2x.....however who was the last free agent (big name) the cardinal signed who wasnt previously on the team.  Izzy?

And the first move has been made. The Cards signed Brayan Pena to a two-year deal.

Sort of a nothing move. Idk how much better then cruz he is.  At the plate he may be alittle better.   Behind it, it sounds like 2015 was a career worst year.  I dont see him taking much time from yadi.

Peralta? But your point is valid. No one is going to confuse Moz for my wife turned loose at the mall with a no-limit credit card.

Yeah perAlta would count I guess.  Even tho I dont think a ton of teams were in the running and it was only 4 years.  I dont think anyone saw peralta as a top of the league ss.  Ended up mo hif a hr with him.

Re: Hot Stove Crap

The twins just landed Byung Ho Park for 4 years/ 12Million dollars?

He hit .343 with 53 HRs and 146 RBIs in Korea last year, and that's only 3 million a year???? And we didn't look into this? He's a 1B option???

grrr.....

I remember reading somewhere the Cardinals at least kicked the tires, but I'm not sure if they submitted a bid.

Re: Hot Stove Crap

The Cardinals were apparently about to sign Price until the Red Sox blew their offer away. Just missed again. Obviously, Moz was exhausted after the Brayan Pena negotiations. A guy can only do so much.

Pretty sure the Cards submitted a bid, but the Twins outbid them (add that $12MM+ to what they're actually paying him, Alz). It's a totally blind process as I understand, where you get one shot in the dark just to buy the privilege of negotiating with him. Seems kinda weird to me.

Hopefully having Price off the table helps the Cards to focus on other options and keeps Boston from bidding them up.

I'm not disappointed or bothered. I'm confused. The Red Sox' owner last year publicly stated they wouldn't be going after Lester because their policy was not to sign pitchers over 30 to long-term contracts. Then they gave away the store for Price.
Then there's the lefty-pitching-in-Fenway component. The last left-handed pitcher to win 20 games with the Red Sox was Mel Parnell, in 1953.
And there's a soap opera angle because Price and Ortiz don't get along. It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out.

I saw a lot made of the fact that Price's ERA in Fenway is sub-2.00. Not sure how many games that covers.

I've seen reports today that the Cardinals offered 7 years and "at least $30M less" than Boston.  Playing detective, they probably offered more than 7/$175M ($25M per year), otherwise the report would have been "at least $40M less," but 7/$182M ($26M per year) fits in the correct range.  Honestly, I'm not sure I'm disappointed that the Cardinals missed out.  That's a whole lot of coin to a guy who's thrown 500 innings in the last 2 seasons.  I know he's been relatively injury-free, but you almost have to assume he misses at least 1 year during that deal.

I miss Joe Kelly

http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2015/12/david_price_to_boston_red_sox.html#incart_story_package

From the same site:
"He (Price) has a 6-1 record with a 1.95 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 11 career starts (74 innings) at Fenway Park ... He held Red Sox batters to a .186 batting average, .261 on-base percentage, .289 slugging percentage and .550 OPS (292 plate appearances)"

Re: Hot Stove Crap

The more I think about price the more happy I am that the cards missed.  I think there would be buyers remorse.  For that amount of money I dont think he is that much better then a mid range starter.  I mean ur cost per win ratio.  If the cards can sore up the roation alittle that money may be spent better else where and not have a gigantic co tract on the books forever.

A cranky as he is, Greinke is the better sign, at least IMHO. Granted, he's older and he's supposedly looking for a higher AAV, but the length of the contract likely won't be the same as Price's. And he's a more of a ground ball/fly ball guy than some of the other elite pitchers, meaning a gradual drop in velocity may not impact him as much as it has, say Verlander or Peavy, who went from very good pitchers to average pitchers almost overnight.

I kind of figured they woukd deal him or tender him a contract taking him to st.  Oh well, no lose really.  I doubt they would have recieved much.  They did get someone for cruz but from reading about him it sounded like they got a basket of golf balls,

Peter Bourjos receives a raise from $1.65M to $2M from the Phillies.

Other than porn, is there another industry in which someone can suck so much and still earn a 20% raise?
